Haven't read much about this news here, so posting it. Hope this helps and is not too stale! The Canada Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) has gone into effect today, July 1st. With the CASL now in force, mailers will need to have consent from their users they’re mailing to. Failure to comply with CASL, could result in big fines. Mailers should cleanse their database of Canadian users (unless you have consent, which in most cases, don’t). There are 4 levels of filtering possible to cleanse your database of Canadian users: 1. Block Canadian IPs using IP detection: · Free option: http://www.hostip.info/use.html · More accurate option: https://www.maxmind.com/en/geolocation_landing 2. Block Canadian Email Domains: · Email Domain = .ca 3. Block Canadian Postal Codes: · Postal code = 6 digit alphanumeric 4. If you have the capability, block mobile users also by carrier: National Carriers · Rogers Wireless (Rogers, Fido, Chatr) · Telus Mobility (Telus, Koodo, Mike, Clearnet, Public Mobile) · Bell Wireless (Bell, Virgin, Solo, Northwestel, Bell Aliant, Télébec, NorthernTel) Regional Carriers · Globalive Wireless (Wind) · SaskTel Mobility (SaskTel) · Videotron Mobile (Videotron) · MTS Mobility (MTS) · DAVE Wireless (Mobilicity) · Bragg Communications (EastLink) · TBayTel (TBayTel) · Ice Wireless (Ice Wireless) It’s impossible to filter out all Canadian email addresses, so you can add one of these disclaimers to the footer of the emails: This message is intended for US residents only Message is for US residents only. Message for US Residents Only. This email is for US Residents. This communication is meant for US residents. US Residents Only Message intended for US residents. (an so on) Regards!
That's some really nice practical advice! We wrote about it on our blog a few months ago (BEFORE The Donald launched his bid for The White House, eh hem). The basics about CAN-SPAM vs. CASL: http://www.volomp.com/legal-issues/can-spam-vs-casl/
