Jay Leno Named Top Spam Email Lure

It's not uncommon for celebrity names to be used as a way to lure unsuspecting people into clicking open a spam email. In an odd way, a celebrity's popularity on the list of most commonly used names must offer up some indication of either overall popularity or the gullible nature of that celebrity's fans.

So I'm not sure what to make of the fact that Jay Leno is the most commonly used spam email lure, according to Internet security company BitDefender.

Out of 25 million spam messages analyzed by the company, Leno was mentioned in the subject line of 38,000 of them, often with an enticing message such as "Jay Leno found taking drugs."

Madonna and Cameron Diaz were numbers two and three on the list, with the remainder of the top ten filled by President Obama, AC/DC, Stephen King, George Lucas, Kenny Chesney, Howard Stern and 50 Cent.

Cyber criminals follow the latest trends just as consumers do and they use these and the names of popular celebrities in their campaigns in order to lure people to websites that are full of malicious software," said Catalin Cosoi, head of the BitDefender Online Threats Lab in a statement. "As a result, users searching for the latest videos or pictures can instead end up with a host of problems on their computer.”

So how well do you think "Jay Leno found with Madonna and Carmeron Diaz taking Drugs and listening to AC/DC and 50 Cent" would do?
