    Hi,

I tried mailing some time ago and stopped. Now I want to get into it again. I have a version of pmta installed and now the quesion arises what settings do you guys use for GI or does it really matter at all since the name of the game seems to be to pump out as much volume as you can?

I will be mailing of one ip and domain for at a time.

    Defaults for me are
    Code:
    max-smtp-out 20
    bounce-after 4d12h
    retry-after 10m

    Any hints are greatly appreciated

    Thanks in advance

Bounce-after is going to kill the server w/ overload @ 4 days.
I was just talking to someone the other day about this very same thing.

Right now, i'm playing around with bouncing between 1-2 minutes depending on the sever specs.

mailing to GI you need to use this as well:

increase GI performance, reduce dns timeouts:

    max-name-queries 8192

i would personally use max-smtp-out of 1, 3 at most

as far as how you should handle bounces and retries.... GI tends to be a hot mess full of traps, typo domains that are registered as traps, hundreds of frivolous blacklists, default deny policy blacklists triggered by any mail from an ip never seen before, trigger happy domain blacklists for domains never seen before, etc

if you're starting with a new list then retrying after 15 minutes with a domain thats been rbl'd by then, as well as hitting several other blacklists for the ip(s), or content of the template, it's possible it's not even worth the retry at all and you need to start over to deliver the rest of the data that didn't make it on the first pass while you figure your list out

if you're not hitting blacklists then a retry time of 15 to 30 minutes and a bounce of 4 hours is probably reasonable

you also probably want to make a pattern list for responses like "too much mail this hour" and back those domains off for 61 minutes

Thanks I will definitley go with those smtp out settings. I am aware of the risks of GI and I think I'll just set my retry to something that it won't come to effect. Again thanks for the hints!

I can't find this directive in the PMTA 4.0r6 or 4.0r8 manuals but my config accepted it just fine.

Are there a range of non-published directives like these?

    Thanks

You could ask your Port25 support person.
