Hi - I'm James. I've been a member of MF for a couple months and am just getting to my "hello" post. Quick background: I am a full-time email marketer on the corporate side (non-affiliate) and have been doing this for about three years. Event emailing, product sales, lead generation, etc. mostly for an energy company but I recently moved into agency side marketing. I know enough to know what I don't know so I'm here to contribute to those who need basics help and I'm hoping to learn from those who know a hell of a lot more than I do.

If I get in your way, on your nerves or present myself as more knowledgeable in an area that I am not, please feel free to put me in my place. I'm simply here to learn as much as possible as the subject matter is very interesting to me and I cannot confidently do it full time without understanding how it all works.

    - J

Thanks for the background James. You mentioned that you moved to the agency side marketing, how is it different than the mailing you were doing before?

Eh, in a couple different ways. A corporation who hires an email marketer full time generally knows the worth of that person and will step back and allow them to run their operation (for the most part). But because of the number of agencies out their that know nothing but still attempt to do SEO/email marketing/etc., you often end up dealing with a client that's paying $250 a month for three newsletters who thinks they know more than you do. I have a client now who brought me a list of over ten million people and asked me to blow a newsletter to all of them. I spend two hours a day spinning things like this to sound prettier than they are. It's not that we won't email your ten million person list that's not vetted because it's illegal, Mr. Client, it's that sending to a list that hasn't been properly verified will cause our spam ratings to go up, our deliverability to go down and we'll have to buy a new IP which costs time and money. On a fun day, this client would tell me to go f- myself and school me on the advantageous BCC feature in Outlook.

Which brings me here, to MF. I have a small list of clients that will always work with me even if I leave the agency. But the majority of them I wouldn't work with if given the choice. So I'd like to set myself up to where I have the choice.
